One of my biggest tips for getting better at writing text response essays is to read lots of articles, study guides, and high scoring essays on the books you have to study. This is because these are the best places to get inspiration for your own writing.
In order to best use these resources, keep an eye out for and take notes on the following things
1. Arguments
What kind of arguments can be made about different themes in the text? Do most people argue for one interpretation, or are there lots of perspectives on the author’s intentions? Focus in particular on any interesting or unique points, since these can add flair if you incorporate them in your own essays.
2. Evidence
This is a super important one!! Any time you come across a particular argument or interpretation, make a note of the evidence the author uses to back it up. Saves you so much time thinking, and gives you free quotes already organised by theme.
3. Cool words and sentences
Take note of any interesting or useful vocabulary you can use in your own writing. I also like to note down any particular phrases or expressions which I find especially eloquent. Try to incorporate these in your next few essays to become comfortable with them.
