Here’s the basic essay structure I used to get a 50 in English. This is the real sauce your teachers never taught you, but which will up your marks heaps if you don’t already follow something like it. It’s bare bones, but still SUPER useful. The fully-detailed post is thousands of words, so I’ll keep this version short and sweet :)
Intro
- Opening sentence about the theme of your prompt
- Slightly more specific sentence which touches on the author, title, historical context, etc
- Three main arguments in the order you’ll cover them
- Contention and overall authorial intent
Body paragraphs (x3)
- Topic sentence (main thing you’ll be talking about)
- 1-2 pieces of evidence (e.g. a quote embedded within a sentence explaining its meaning)
- Explain what this quote shows
- Repeat the above two points (evidence and explanation) 2-4 times
- Link this argument back to your overall contention
Conclusion
- Recap your overall contention
- Reiterate your three main arguments again in order
- End with some more authorial intent, but frame it in a slightly broader, more philosophical way
